Integration of grammar and writing

Grammar Works is a six grade level series of workbooks designed for elementary and middle school students. These books add a strong grammatical dimension to the reading and writing curriculum by helping students understand the how and why of their language as they build a practical, working knowledge of grammar and how it applies to writing.

Benefits

  • Effective, student-friendly, and engaging practice of grammar with a wide variety of exercises.
  • Writing activities in every lesson put skills to use and reinforce understanding.
  • The lessons are structured to provide review and reinforcement.
  • A cross-curricular approach weaves science, math, geography, and history into the lessons.
  • Pretests and posttests assess knowledge—perfect practice for state or standardized tests.
  • Perfect for take-home activities, after-school programs, and summer school.

Student Books

The student books have nine lessons plus three extra review lessons in each unit. A step-by-step instructional design connects grammar and writing.

  • Pretest: Reproducible unit pretests in the Teacher Edition provide for data-driven instruction.
  • Learn It: Students first see a model of the grammatical example, followed by the rule or explanation.
  • Find It: A variety of skill activities provide effective practice of the grammatical rule.
  • Try It: A short, informal writing activity lets students apply the grammatical rule.
  • Fix It: An editing activity ends the instruction.
  • Posttest: Reproducible unit posttests in the Teacher Edition help identify what students have learned and where they might need more practice.

For quick reference, a Student Handbook at the end of each student book features

  • grammar rules
  • definitions
  • charts
  • rules and definitions from earlier levels

These helpful wraparound editions contain extremely useful resources for teachers at the point of use

  • a grid showing the scope and sequence of the entire program to quickly identify when specific skills are taught
  • a complete glossary of rules, definitions, and charts for quick reference
  • a bonus oral activity for each

Grade 3 (Book C)

Provides an understanding of the different kinds of sentences, capitalization rules, nouns, articles, adjectives, pronouns, and the concept of the subject of a sentence.

Grade 4 (Book D)

Introduces the predicate and allows students to build on what they have already learned. New information on parts of speech, sentence structure, and mechanics is added as it specifically applies to the subject and predicate of a sentence.

Grade 5 (Book E)

Teaches that a sentence can have more than one subject and predicate. Students work with compound subjects and predicates, how to join compounds using conjunctions, and how to liven up sentences by using interjections, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs within compounds.

Grade 6 (Book F)

Focuses on compounds and predicates. Students learn about direct and indirect objects, predicate nouns and predicate adjectives, prepositions and prepositional phrases, punctuation and capitalization of book and movie titles, and perfect tenses, all designed to prepare them for writing complex sentences.

Grade 7 (Book G)

Introduces clauses, phrases, voice, and mood. Punctuating complex sentences with the varying components taught here and in earlier levels helps produce good writing.

Grade 8 (Book H)

Explains person and how to use it appropriately when writing. Additional information about phrases and mood helps students better express their thoughts in writing.
