About Carpentry

Carpentry is a trade in which the primary work performed is the cutting, shaping and installation of building materials during the construction of buildings, ships, timber bridges, concrete formwork, etc. Carpenters are usually the first tradespeople on a construction job and the last to leave. broad-based structure. Apprenticeships usually last four years and combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction.

While the most common type of carpentry is residential construction, commercial and industrial carpenters make up a significant portion of the workforce.

Learning Carpentry

The most important skills for a carpenter are practical skills such as the ability to safely use tools and equipment, and to work confidently with timber. Carpenters also need to be able to follow plans and instructions, and to understand and apply basic carpentry principles.

Carpenters typically complete a four-year apprenticeship in order to learn the trade. Apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction, and apprentices must be able to pass a final exam in order to receive their journeyman's license. With experience, carpenters may specialize in a particular type of carpentry or take on management roles.

Carpentry training can be undertaken through a registered apprenticeship, or by completing a Certificate III in Carpentry or a similar qualification. Carpenters who wish to progress their career can complete further training to become a registered builder, or a specialist in a particular area of carpentry such as heritage restoration or kitchen cabinet-making.
