Jazz
What is Jazz?
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It emerged in the form of ragtime and blues and later evolved into New Orleans jazz.
Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime.
As a result of the technology and economic growth of the late 19th century, jazz spread throughout America and to Europe and the rest of the world. Jazz became increasingly popular and influential, and by the 1930s it was regarded as an art form on par with other traditional music genres.
Despite its commercial success, jazz has always been associated with artistic freedom and innovation, and its originality has been praised by critics and fans alike. One of the genre's earliest innovators was Louis Armstrong, who was known for his solo work and for his influential role in developing the jazz band.
Other important early jazz musicians include Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, and Billie Holiday. In the 1940s and 1950s, bebop and cool jazz emerged as new jazz styles. Hard bop and free jazz developed in the 1950s and 1960s.
