What is Light & Sound?
Light and sound are both forms of energy. Energy is the ability to do work. We see light because it reflects off of objects and into our eyes. Our eyes change the light into electrical signals that our brain interprets as images. We hear sound when vibrations travel through the air (or another medium) and into our ears. Our ears change the vibrations into electrical signals that our brain interprets as sound.
Light is a type of energy that travels through the air and is used to see things. It is made up of tiny particles called photons. Sound is also a type of energy that travels through the air (or another medium) and is used to hear things. It is made up of tiny vibrations called sound waves.
We use our eyes to see because they change light into electrical signals that our brain interprets as images. Our eyes work by letting light in through the pupil (a small black dot in the center of your eye), and then the light hits the retina (a thin layer of tissue at the back of your eye). The retina changes the light into electrical signals, and then these signals travel to the brain through the optic nerve. The brain interprets these signals as images.
We use our ears to hear because they change sound waves into electrical signals that our brain interprets as sound. Our ears work by letting sound waves in through the ear canal (a small hole in your outer ear), and then the sound waves hit the eardrum (a thin piece of tissue). The eardrum vibrates, and these vibrations are passed to three tiny bones in your middle ear. These bones vibrate, and these vibrations are passed to the cochlea (a snail-shaped organ in your inner ear). The cochlea changes the vibrations into electrical signals, and then these signals travel to the brain through the auditory nerve. The brain interprets these signals as sound.
Light waves are used in many different ways. One common use of light waves is in communication. Light waves can be used to carry information from one place to another. For example, light waves are used in fiber optic cables to transmit information long distances.
Sound waves are also used in communication. Sound waves can be used to carry information from one place to another. For example, sound waves are used in telephones and loudspeakers to transmit information over long distances.
In addition to communication, light and sound waves are also used in many other ways. For example, light waves are used in medicine to create images of the human body. Sound waves are used in medicine to create images of the human body as well.
