About Reading

There is no one answer to this question since reading is such a complex and individualized skill. In general, though, reading is a process of extracting meaning from a text through interpretation and analysis. This meaning is then stored in the reader's memory, to be recalled and used in future reading tasks.

To become a proficient reader, individuals must first develop phonemic awareness, phonics skills, and fluency. This knowledge forms the foundation upon which more difficult reading comprehension skills can be built. Comprehension skills involve both literal and inferential understanding of a text, and the ability to make connections between the text and the reader's prior knowledge.
